STATEMENT REGARDING GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it — The government shutdown of 2013 was responsible for costing billions of dollars to our overall economy. Crops were rotting in our fields because visas weren’t issued to the workers who were essential for picking those crops. Lest we forget, the loss of tourism, and the halt of our real estate industry.
We have a problem in Washington, and that problem is the inefficiency of Republican Members of Congress to agree on issues that benefit the American people. Instead, Republicans in Congress play the blame game while they continue making decisions based on divisive partisan politics, while also putting their personal political interest before the interest of American families.
Contrary to what’s being said, this government shutdown is not the fault of Democrats. This shutdown has been orchestrated by President Donald J. Trump and Republicans in Congress, because the bipartisan deal to stay open doesn’t keep enough people of color out of America.
The President and Republicans in Congress want voters to believe Democrats are responsible and forget Republicans run Washington — they hold all of the cards.
It is at times like this Democrats MUST stand their ground by insisting;
We will not fund the deportation of 800,000 young Americans who’ve been here since they were born.
We will not fund a government that ends health insurance for 9 million kids.
We will not fund a government that pays for more weapons by cutting education.
I favor a form of governing that prizes pragmatism over purity, and effectiveness over ideology. That’s also what Florida’s 17th Congressional District needs. We don’t need shrill partisan rhetoric or extreme positions that shut down government and endanger the good faith and credit of the United States. We need a representative in Washington who is committed to getting things done for the people and the economy of Southwest and West Central Florida.
That’s why I’m running for Congress in the 17th District.
